Known collectively in Spain as 'MSN', the South American trio reached 102 goals for the season in all competitions in the La Liga leaders' 6-0 drubbing of Getafe on Tuesday, two more than the club record set by Messi, Samuel Eto'o and Thierry Henry when Barca won the treble in 2009.
Brazilians, Argentines and
Uruguayans are not famed for always getting on but Barca’s three amigos have
clicked like no forward line in the club’s history smashing the 100 goal mark
reached by Messi, Samuel Eto’o and Thierry Henry in 2009 and they still have a
possible eight games to play.
Neymar published a photograph of
himself with his fellow Barcelona attackers on Tuesday night as supporters
debated whether this was the greatest forward line in the club’s history.
Messi struck twice, including a dinked 'Panenka' penalty, Suarez also
hit a double and Neymar scored once as Barca pulled five points clear of
second-placed Real Madrid at the top with four games remaining.
All six of Barca's goals, including a superb curling effort into the top
corner from captain Xavi, delighted the Nou Camp faithful and Barca's
dazzling performance suggested they could be peaking at just the right
time.
“I don’t remember ever seeing a game with quite so many spectacular goals” said Luis Enrique,
he glowingly said afterwards. “When the team is as effective as that, they’re unstoppable.” “I want to congratulate the team” he continued. “Things could have turned difficult today but the players resolved the situation in the best possible way”
Spanish teams who finish level on points are separated by their head-to-head record - not goal difference - and Madrid have the superior record this season.
Carlo Ancelotti's side won 3-1 at the Bernabeu in October while Barca triumphed 2-1 at the Nou Camp last month. So Luis Enrique has a lot to do if Real are to win tonight.
